How to use a bicycle torque wrench correctly

The short answer: Use the manufacturer’s torque specification for the particular component. There is no single Nm value for every stem. A torque wrench with a 2–24 Nm range is suitable only when the specified value falls within that range.
How to find the correct torque
Find the value on the component or in the bicycle and component manufacturers’ documentation. Also check the prescribed preparation of threads and contact surfaces. Use lubricant or assembly paste only where the manufacturer specifies it.

Using an adjustable click-type torque wrench
- Check that the wrench, bit and bolt suit the application.
- Set the specified value according to the wrench manual.
- Insert the bit fully and squarely into the bolt head.
- Hold the wrench at the indicated position on the handle and apply force steadily.
- Stop at the signal or felt release; do not keep tightening.
- Check any specified tightening sequence when there are multiple bolts.

0.2 Nm is the scale increment, not a stated measurement error. Check the current contents on the product page; other torque wrench sets may contain different items.
Common mistakes
- Applying an example value such as 7 Nm to every stem.
- Trying to use a setting outside the measurement range.
- Continuing to tighten after the wrench has indicated the set torque.
- Using a precision wrench to break seized bolts loose.
- Using a poorly fitting bit or working at an angle to the bolt.
Storage and maintenance
Store a torque wrench clean and dry in its case. Follow your model’s storage and calibration instructions. Click-type wrenches are generally stored at the lowest scale setting, not below the range. Have the wrench checked after a hard fall.
