Cleaning your bicycle: a practical routine

The short answer: Use products suited to your bicycle and its components. Work carefully, keep cleaners and lubricants away from braking surfaces, and follow the bicycle and cleaning product manufacturers’ instructions.

Prepare your bicycle and equipment

Support the bicycle securely and prepare soft cloths, suitable brushes and an appropriate bicycle cleaner. For an e-bike, follow the drive system’s cleaning instructions. Do not direct a powerful jet of water at bearings, seals or electronics.

Work from removing dirt to finishing

  • Gently remove loose dirt without rubbing it across the paintwork.
  • Clean the frame and components with a product intended for that use.
  • Use suitable tools for the drivetrain and follow the cleaner’s recommended contact time.
  • Rinse or wipe according to the product instructions and dry the bicycle.
  • Lubricate the chain only with a suitable product and remove the excess.

Take care around brakes and electronics

Use separate clean cloths where needed. Oil or cleaning residue on braking surfaces can affect performance. If you notice a brake problem after maintenance, have it checked before riding again.

Choose maintenance products for their intended use

Browse maintenance and repair products and always check the stated application. If you also plan to refit components, read the torque wrench guide.
