Your bicycle helmet check before every ride
Published
The short answer: A quick check helps you notice whether your helmet still fits and works properly. Check the fit, protective parts, straps and any built-in lights before setting off.
The five-point check
- Look for damage to the shell or foam.
- Check that the straps and buckle are intact.
- Put the helmet on level and fasten it according to the manual.
- Check that the visor gives you a clear view and is securely attached.
- Test the helmet lights if fitted; check your bicycle lights too.
What should you do if there is a problem?
A crack, faulty buckle or uncertainty after an impact is no reason to use the helmet for one more ride. Consult the manufacturer or replace it according to the instructions. If only the visor is damaged, check which replacement fits your model.
Reassess the fit
If the helmet fits differently from before, check its adjustment and the condition of the padding. A general size letter tells you little without a measurement in centimetres. Read the guide to measuring and adjusting and when to replace a bicycle helmet.
