Cycling with your dog: choosing and using a trailer

The short answer: Check your dog’s weight, the usable interior space and the connection to your bicycle. The maximum load alone does not tell you whether your dog will fit comfortably in the trailer.
Does your dog fit in the trailer?
Compare your dog’s weight with the chosen model’s limit. Also measure your dog and compare with the internal dimensions: there must be enough room for a comfortable position. Include luggage in the permitted load and check what the manual means by total weight.
Check the hitch and axle
A hitch does not automatically fit every bicycle. Axles, mounting space and bicycle construction can differ. Check the required hitch or adapter before ordering. If unsure, ask for advice with the bicycle model and a photo of the axle.
Help your dog get used to it gradually
- Let your dog get used to the stationary trailer first.
- Reward calm entry and exit without riding straight away.
- Start with a short, gentle movement on level ground.
- Build up the duration gradually and plan breaks.
- Stop if your dog becomes restless or seems uncomfortable.
Checks before every ride
Follow the manual for coupling, securing the hitch, the internal restraint, load and tyre pressure. There is no universal tyre pressure for all bicycle trailers. Check the specified value for your model without exceeding the tyre’s limit.
A trailer changes how the bicycle handles. Take corners gently, leave space and adapt your speed to the surface and situation. A trailer can tip over and does not guarantee that a dog will always remain relaxed.
